Captain Giles Edward Rae, 82
Giles E. Rae, 82, born in the Bronx, NY, on April 9, 1935 died peacefully with his wife, Eleanor at his at his home on City Island on Monday, January 1, 2018.
Giles enjoyed travel, meeting new people and watching sports. He was also a devoted animal lover and NY Yankee fan. He and his wife were instrumental to starting the Hutchinson River Restoration Project and the annual fall clean up event. Later in life, he spent much of his time working on his computer and buzzing around City Island in his powered wheelchair. He also enjoyed spending time with his children and grandchildren.
Giles graduated from Fordham Prep in 1952, Fordham University in 1956 with a degree in Physics and New York Institute of Technology with a Masters in Business Administration in 19XX. On June 16,1956 he married the former Eleanor Jean Pratzen in Meriden, CT. Giles was an Air Force ROTC officer and received his commission as a 2nd lieutenant in 1956 upon graduation, spend 4 years in active service on the west coast and 9 years in the reserve.
Giles is survived by his three children, Cynthia Ann Tallett, Susan Rae Lanser, Giles John Rae and his wife of 61 years Eleanor Jean Rae; eight grandchildren, Ian, Hawley, Sara, Dylan, Andrew, Giles Allen, Wes and Lauren; his sister Joan Rae. He was preceded in death by his parents, Giles Mansfield and Mary Agnus Rae.
A military funeral will be held for Giles on Friday, January 5th at Calverton National Cemetery. The family is also planning a celebration of life event for April of this year. Memorials may be made to the James Peters Veterans Administration and the Hutchinson River Restoration Project. (Need specific sites)
