Edward Joseph McGreal, 53, of Hickory, loving husband, father and retired NYPD Captain passed away Friday, October 13th in Denver, CO, on a visit he had looked forward to for a very long time.

Born Jan. 9, 1964 in the Bronx, NY, he was the son of Patricia Brady McGreal and Donald McGreal.

Edward began his career in 1984 as an NYC Housing Police Officer. He moved up the ranks and was promoted to NYPD Captain in 1997 after the departments merged. On September 11, 2001, he lead a platoon consisting of officers, sergeants, and lieutenants to the World Trade Center. He later assumed command of PSA 6 in 2002. Throughout his career, Edward received six commendations for excellent police duty. He retired after over 20 years of service to Hickory, NC with his family. He began working in construction with Huffman Builders, then started his own home rental company, EDCO Properties.

Edward was suffering from 9/11 related cancer. He fought for 3 years, but succumbed after a seizure caused by the spread of the cancer.

He is survived by his wife of 32 years, Angela, his three children, Meghan, Matthew, and Ryan, his brother, Bryan McGreal and his sister, Jayne McGreal Labbate.

The family will receive friends from 7:00 PM - 9:00 PM, Wednesday October 18, 2017 and Thursday October 19, 2017 from 2:00-5:00 PM & 7:00-9:00 PM at Schuyler Hill Funeral Home. Mass of Christian burial will be held at Our Lady of Assumption Church at 9:30AM, Friday October 20, 2017. Burial will be in Kensico Cemetery, Valhalla, NY.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent in his honor to the NYPD PBA Widows and Orphans Fund, or the NYPD Captain’s Endowment (CEA) College Scholarship Fund.
