Obituary for Dhoalma Guevara-Rogers

Dhoalma Guevara-Rogers
DHOALMA RUIZ GUEVARA- ROGERS Dhoalma, or Bon, as she is fondly called by her siblings, or Dhoal to her friends, is the youngest of the nine (9) children in the family of five (5) girls and four (4) boys. She is the youngest child of Getulio Zata Guevara, a retired Judge of the Court of Agrarian Relation, and Rizalina Nobleza Ruiz, a retired Public School Teacher. Her parents are both from one of the remote towns of the Province of Aklan, named Libacao. After World War II, the group of HUKBALAHAP (Hukbong Laban sa Hapon) were not yet disbanded and somewhat went rogue. Since the group were still prevalent in Libacao, and fearing the safety of the children, the family moved to Kalibo, which is the capital of the province of Aklan. On December 5, 1958, Dhoalma was born in Kalibo, Aklan. Being the youngest in the family, she was the center of attention, smart, loving and very expressive of her feelings to her parents, through hugs and embraces. Among her brothers, whom she is closest with is Prospero. They would be seen playing together by spreading a woven native mat on the concrete floor of their house near the dining area and they would play games for hours. The closest among her sisters is Rigie, who is her partner in shopping, getaways and small adventures. Their chatting and laughter seems not to end every year they meet. Although, she is the youngest in the family, she speaks out of her opinions or decisions, and does not get intimated by her older siblings. She stands for the truth, what is supposed to be right and what should be done. Dhoalma took her elementary education at the Kalibo Pilot Elementary School and at the Aklan College for her high school. In high school, her best friend Hope and other friends, described her as a neat, fashionable, studious, fun-loving, and talented person. In an old-fashioned environment, Dhoal dared to wear tight blouses and jeans and folded her uniform from the waist just to get the mini-skirt look. She is known in her batch as the Fara Fawcet Majors, with her hair style. Among her close friends, she had the loudest and most infectious laughter. She played the piano as well, with her favorite piece An Affair to Remember. With her loud and commanding voice and strictness, she was Battalion Company Commander ranked as Captain in their CAT (Citizens Army Training). She was among the Top 10 of the High School Class 1975. Dhoalma pursued her college study in Manila to take up the degree of Bachelor of Science in Nursing at the University of Santo Tomas located at Espana, Manila. After passing the Board Examination, she worked as a Special Nurse for a patient with autism, then Volunteer Nurse for an NGO wherein they were deployed in remote areas of the country like in Lemery, Batangas. After enough hands-on work experience, she went back to her birth place and worked as a Clinical Instructor at the St. Gabriel School of Nursing, at Kalibo, Aklan. Outside school, Dhoal is close with her students, but inside the classroom, she is a strict mentor. After a few years of being a Clinical Instructor, Dhoalma accepted a nursing job in the United States of America. She worked at Jacobi Medical Center, Lenox Hill Hospital, and became the Nursing Manager of the Oncology Unit. She went on to obtain her Nurse Practitioner at Hunter College specializing in Geriatrics and she worked at Daughters of Jacob Nursing Home. As a daughter, Dhoal is very devoted to her parents, and sees to it that they are financially provided. When their mother was diagnosed with thyroid cancer, she fully provided for her medical and financial needs. She would frequently fly back to the Philippines just so her mother would undergo the required medical operation and treatment and personally provided the post-operation care as well, aside from the emotional support. As sister to her siblings, Dhoal is caring, thoughtful, and unselfish but at the same time tough and straight-forward. Every year, she would always bring gifts, chocolates, or little somethings when she goes home to the Philippines. If necessary, she even would buy the personal needs of a less fortunate sibling. When the time of her brother Prospero ended, Dhoal provided for his cemetery lot and other funeral expenses. She even redeemed the residential property of a brother from a lending institution, and even to the extent of supposedly buying the property, just so it will not be lost from the family. She would always host a small family gathering, together with cousins and other relatives. As an aunt to her nephews and nieces, she is proud of their achievements and generous with praises, gives them encouragement, and advice, if necessary. As a cousin she is thoughtful and wants to maintain constant communication with the clan, and never forgets to bring or give them even a little something whenever she is home in the Philippines. She would invite them in their house, or visit them if necessary. In the land of many opportunities, this is where she found her true love and partner in life. She is survived by her husband, James Rogers, whom she was married to in February 2008, and their son Ferdinand James Guevara Rogers.
