Sylvester Skrapits
December 31, 1928 – April 12, 2020

Sylvester Skrapits, 91, passed away during the early morning hours of Easter Sunday, April 12, 2020.

Veszti, as he was known to all, was born in Szentpéterfa, Hungary on December 31, 1928, on his namesake saint’s day. He was one of eight children of the late István and Rozália Skrapits, and the last surviving sibling from his family.

Like so many others, Veszti decided to leave his homeland in November 1956 after the failed Hungarian revolution. He crossed into Austria, was shepherded through several refugee camps, and eventually landed at Camp Kilmer in New Jersey in February 1957. He settled in New York City, near friends and relatives, where he lived for the majority of his life.

Veszti briefly returned to Szentpéterfa, where he married Jolan Schrammel on July 31, 1966. They returned to the United States where their only child, daughter Rita, was born in New York in June 1968.

Veszti was a tailor by trade and worked in that profession for several years, then became a doorman later on in life. Upon retirement, Veszti began to spend more and more time in his hometown, resulting in a permanent move back to Szentpéterfa, where he enjoyed his house, family and friends. Veszti and Yolan resided in Szentpéterfa for 15 years, returning back to the U.S. in 2015 and settling in the Throggs Neck area of the Bronx.

Survivors include wife Yolan, daughter Rita, and son-in-law David Bacas. Veszti was predeceased by his parents and seven siblings: Toni, Pista, Johanna, Leo, Matyi, Guszti, and Lajos.

Services: After a long wait, a memorial mass has been scheduled for Saturday, August 22, 2020 at 9am at St. Frances de Chantal Church, 190 Hollywood Ave, Bronx, NY. This is a community (non-private) mass that will be held in honor of Sylvester, with a brief memorial service at the end. Veszti’s cremated remains will be returned to Szentpéterfa for final burial as soon as opportunity permits.
