Obituary for Roberto Fernandez

Roberto Fernandez, 91, passed away on May 10th, 2020, at the Avante Nursing Home in Mount Dora, Florida. He is survived by four children, four grandchildren, and three greatgrandchildren.
Roberto was born on June 20th, 1928, in Maunabo, Puerto Rico to Anna Lozada and Evaristo Fernandez. He graduated high school in 1946, and in June of 1948, he joined the U.S. Army National Guard from which he was honorably discharged in May of 1951. He then joined the Marine Corp. and served until his discharge in December of 1953. After that he went on to study at the University of Puerto Rico and graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in elementary Education in June of 1956. In September of 1960, he was awarded certification as a Boy Scout Professional Leader and served as mentor to the youth of his community. During this time, he continued studying and earned his Master of Science from Hunter College in June of 1975. After helping to raise his four children, he began studying to become a deacon of the Catholic Archdiocese and was, upon graduating in 1979, appointed to Holy Cross Church.
A Celebration-of-Life mass will be held at Holy Cross Church at 600 Soundview Avenue in the Bronx, 10473, on Thursday, September 16th, 2021 at 9:30 a.m. After the mass, there will be a Marine Corp Honor Guard Ceremony in the St. Ann’s Section of Saint Raymond’s Cemetery, main entrance, located at 2600 Lafayette Ave, Bronx, NY 10465.
