Obituary for Peter Campanelli

Peter Paul Campanelli, 95, of Throgs Neck, the Bronx, NY passed away on Thursday, June 16, 2022.

He was born to Mary and Gaetano Campanelli in 1926 and raised on Clarence Avenue across the street from Long Island Sound. As a result of living so close to the water, Peter learned to swim and sail at an early age. The waters of Long Island Sound remained a constant for his entire life.

Peter joined the Navy the day after Pearl Harbor was attacked, and had to wait to serve until he turned 18. He served in the Pacific on PT Boats as a Machinist Mate. Upon his return from the Pacific, Peter met his future wife, Lillian. In 1954, he joined the Fire Department of New York and rose to the rank of Marine Engineer before retiring in 1985. He was a gifted carpenter and mechanic.

Lillian and Peter married in 1949. Peter is survived by his wife Lillian of almost 73 years; a daughter, Anne Marie (Sal) Ferrante of Coconut Creek, FL; four sons, Thomas (Mitzi) of Gig Harbor, WA; Peter (Lois) of Fernandina Beach, FL; James (Linda) of Thornwood, NY; John (Valerie) of Madison, CT; a daughter-in-law, Veronica of Nyack, NY; and nine grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. Peter was preceded in death by a son, Michael, and his brother, Rocco.

Visitation will be held at Schuyler Hill Funeral Home (3535 East Tremont Avenue Bronx) from 3:00 to 7:00 pm on Tuesday, June 21. The funeral service will be at St. Benedict’s Roman Catholic Church (2969 Otis Avenue, Bronx, NY) at 10:30 am on Wednesday, June 22.

In lieu of flowers the family suggests memorial donations be made to the New York Firefighters Burn Center Foundation (www.nyffburncenter.com).
