Obituary for Patricia C. Bloss

Patricia C. Bloss
Patricia C. Bloss was born in 1936 at Sloane Hospital to Larry and Dorothy Cronin and was Baptized at St. Benedict’s Church. Her family lived on Randall Avenue for a few years and then moved to an apartment on Castle Hill Avenue across from St. Raymond’s Church. This was where she spent most of her childhood and attended St. Raymond’s Elementary School and Aquinas High School. After graduating from Aquinas in 1954, she worked as a secretary at JP Morgan Bank on Wall Street. She loved her job at Morgan and told many stories of her time there over the years.

In 1961, she married a Silver Beach native, Donald Bloss, and they moved into a small apartment in Pelham Bay. Being the modern woman that she was, she continued to work at JP Morgan until late 1963 when she left in anticipation of the birth of her first child, Donald. In 1964, Don and Pat moved their small family back into a bungalow on Holly Place in Silver Beach where they then welcomed 2 more children, Larry and Tricia, into the world. In 1973, they moved into a larger home on Maple Avenue in Silver Beach where Pat was a stay-at-home Mom and a volunteer reading mom at St. Frances de Chantal School. In 1976, Don retired from the NYC Sanitation Department and Pat and Don decided to go on an adventure and moved their family to California to be closer to Don’s brother, Harry. Pat loved her time in California as she enjoyed the mild climate and was able to garden all-year round. Despite the wonderful weather, the family’s time on the West-coast only lasted for one year and they moved back to the Bronx into Locust Point in 1977. Pat said she liked California more, but deep down she was happy to be back and was also able to rejoin her monthly card game of Continental with “the girls” from Silver Beach.

In 1978, with her youngest child in 4th grade, Pat decided that she would go back to work doing what she loved and got a job at SUNY Maritime College as a secretary in the office of Public Safety. Pat loved working at “The Fort”; she and a great group of women from Throgg’s Neck were the backbone of Maritime for many years. She and “the ladies” had many good times at work and at their dinners, outings, and Holiday celebrations. When Admiral Floyd H. Miller became the President of the College in 1982, he chose Pat to be his secretary from all of the candidates who applied for the job. She worked with Adm. Miller until she retired from Maritime in 1992.

Between 1991 and 1992, Pat and Don built their retirement home in The Poconos where Pat learned of her love for construction and design. Pat worked part time in her lake community’s administration office helping new residents as they were building their homes. They enjoyed a wonderful retirement there until Don passed in 2013. Pat, being the independent and strong lady that she was, stayed in the Poconos living independently up until 2 weeks before she passed.

Pat leaves behind her children, Donald, Larry and Tricia, her sister, Judy, her daughter in law, Carol, son in law, Kevin, and her grandchildren, Patrick, Thomas, Katelyn, Grace, Sarah, Meaghan and Kevin in addition to her nieces and nephews and many friends both here and in Pennsylvania.
