Obituary for Margaret M. Hieb

On November 1st, we lost our beautiful mother, grandmother, great grandmother and friend. Mom was a strong, loving person. A devoted wife and mother she was our biggest supporter and a person we could always rely on. She is predeceased by her husband of forty years, Fred, and son James (Lynn). She is survived by her two other children: Patricia and Michael (Eileen), her four granddaughters Tammy, Laura, Janet and Erin, and her four greatgrandchildren, Caitlyn, Anna, Finn and James.

Margaret (Peggy) Mary McHenry was born in the Manhattan on August 21,1923 to Patrick and Julia McHenry. She grew up in the Bronx with her sister Julia (Sheila) living by 138th Street and St. Jerome’s Parish where she attended elementary school and attended Cathedral High School. She was a very intelligent woman who spoke three languages (English, Latin and French) and was always happy to help with her grandchildren’s homework.
Mom became a telephone operator for NY Telephone and made many longtime friends in the telephone company, (Ma Bell) back in the day. She kept in touch with friends she made in high school and some of the nuns who taught her for most of her life.
Mom was always welcoming to the friends we brought to the house and was always ready with a cup of tea and some cookies. Mom had a sweet tooth and passed it on too many of us. She loved to go to high tea with her granddaughters Laura and Janet who took her to some of the finest places in Manhattan.
She loved to laugh, had a witty sense of humor, and loved a good joke. She always said she wanted a Jeep Cherokee and park in the driveway even though she only drove to get her driver’s license and never drove again!
Mom loved St. Patrick’s Day especially on the day of the Throggs Neck parade. She would walk up to the corner of E. Tremont and Harding with her daughter Patricia waiting for her favorite band The Kerry Pipers to march by. Her home being so close to the parade was a great stop before and afterwards and mom loved to have people stop by and say hello.
She also loved to volunteer her time with the church which she did for many years.
Mom was devoted to her family and would do anything to help someone in need, family, friend, or neighbor it didn’t matter. Her grandchildren were the light of her life. They were all her babies no matter how old, and she always loved seeing them, especially around the holidays.
She loved to travel, see Broadway plays and always kept herself busy with friends and hobbies. Only her health finally slowed her down.
We love our mom/granny more than any simple statement can say. She was devoted to us, and we to her. We are all better people for having known and loved her.
