Obituary for Katherine Waldvogel

Katherine “Kat” Waldvogel was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, sister, and friend. She died on October 6, 2022, at the ripe old age of 87.

Born to Krekor and Merzia Mazmanian on September 21, 1935, Katherine grew up in Washington Heights, NY with older sister Merze and younger brother George. After graduating from high school, she worked as a secretary until meeting a handsome and charming bus driver named Fred Waldvogel who she married on September 7, 1959. They settled first in Sunnyside and then Astoria, Queens where they raised two children, Craig and Dawn.

Katherine enjoyed crafts of all kinds and lovingly knit and crocheted sweaters, ponchos and blankets for family, and friends. She also loved cheering for her favorite football team, the NY Giants, attending many a rainy and cold game and passing on the tradition of watching games on TV to her children and grandchildren. Despite not being able to swim, Katherine loved spending days on the beach with her family, another tradition she passed on to her family.

Katherine was known to her grandchildren as “Nanny,” and was a constant, loving presence in their lives. Nanny was almost always around, folding and ironing laundry, tidying up with the “swifter,” and providing help and support to her daughter in raising her kids.

Katherine will be missed by her sister Merze, her son Craig and his wife Tara, her daughter Dawn and her husband Mark, her granddaughter Nicole, and her husband Eliott, her granddaughter Jennifer, her grandson Luke, grandpuppies Kali and Mia and many others who knew and loved her.

For Mom, from Craig -

Since the day I was small,
‘Til the day I became tall,
Since I began understanding things,
‘Til the day I got my own wings,
Your love has never fallen short,
You have been my support.
I want to hold you tight and hug you,
I just want to say thank you.
I miss you, Mom.
