Obituary for Joseph William "Guy" Ryff

Joseph (Guy) William Ryff of Edgewater Park has passed away peacefully on Tuesday night, November 12, 2022, following a stroke. He was 88 years old. His family is filled with a deep sadness; he will be forever and deeply missed. Guy resided in Edgewater Park his entire life and raised his family there with loving wife Carol Ryff.

Guy had been a devoted and loving husband to Carol for 64 years, prior to her passing in 2021,which left him with a deep sadness and loneliness that just couldn’t be filled. He was also a loving father to Guy Michael Ryff (deceased) and Regina Ryff Bull. Guy is survived by Regina and her husband Ronald Bull, as well as his grandson, Derek Bull, son of Regina and Ronald Bull. Guy was predeceased by his immediate family, dad, Buster Ryff, mom, Frances Ryff, and his three younger brothers, Bruce, Gary and Craig.

Those who knew Guy well knew his kindness and very generous nature. He loved to treat those he loved to dinner whenever the opportunity arose, and he was always a most generous tipper, even when not deserved. He also had a unique sense of humor, and anyone who knew him was sure to get an earful of punning, which amused him immensely and hopefully others as well.

Guy spent a short time in the navy during his youth, followed by various jobs including construction, prior to settling in his long-time job with the City of New York Sanitation Dept, from which he retired.

He was fortunate to have his grandson, Derek, live with him part-time for several months this year, which helped greatly in alleviating his sadness and loneliness, and for which he was very grateful. With limited ability to venture outside, his other joys of late included favorite pastimes of reading, especially crime and legal thrillers, playing Scrabble with his daughter, Regina, in addition to dabbling a bit with Chess, after a long hiatus from it. Other joys included eating too much pasta with Rao’s marinara sauce, frying up filet mignons and eating way too many milky way bars.

Arrangements will be handled by Schuyler Hill Funeral Home, 3535 East Tremont Ave., Bronx, NY (718) 792-0270.
