Obituary for Jim P. Mennell

Jim P. Mennell
On Friday, September 1, 2023, James Patrick Mennell passed away suddenly at the age of 61. Best known as “Jim,” he was a dear uncle and cherished friend whose loss echoes in our hearts.

Jim was born in the Bronx on September 22, 1961 to Jane and William “Bill” Mennell. Bill, a decorated Korean War veteran, died of brain cancer when Jim was 7 years old. Jane, who went by “Jennie”, raised him and the two remained extremely close until her death in 2020. Jim took great pride in his Irish-American heritage and he loved spending time in Ireland, where his mother grew up.

Jim found a love of sports early on in his life, both as an athlete and as a devoted fan. Those who knew him knew of his passion for the New York Yankees, Rangers, and Giants, as well as the Notre Dame Fightin’ Irish. In fact, he was most often seen sporting a blue and gold baseball cap. Jim enjoyed going to Yankees and Rangers games with his friends and family, but he was also happy watching them while he sat at his favorite bar with a Budweiser in hand. His greatest passion was engaging in sports discussions with fellow diehard fans.

One of Jim’s defining characteristics was his steadfast dedication to his friends. Not many people can say they have the same friends since childhood, but almost all of Jim’s close friendships were forged in his teenage years growing up in Parkchester and Throgs Neck. In fact, those friends, whom he considered family, still get together yearly to celebrate their friendships, and Jim never missed an opportunity to reminisce and celebrate their shared memories. His profound loss is felt all over the neighborhood and the Bronx at large.

Jim used his sense of humor to show his love and appreciation for those closest to him, and the world is quieter without his booming laugh. He had a special relationship with his niece, Jade, whom he helped to raise, and to her he will always be known as “Uncle Jim.”

Jim’s wake will be held on Thursday, September 7, 2023 from 3-7pm at Schuyler Hill Funeral Home. A funeral mass will be held on Friday, September 8 at the Church of St. Theresa of the Infant Jesus at 9:45am. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital, the Wounded Warrior Project, or the ASPCA.
