Obituary for Jane Mennell

Jane Mennell
On Friday, September 11, 2020, Jane Josephine Mennell, beloved mother, passed away at the age of 87. She is best known as “Aunt Jennie”, a loving aunt who touched the lives of those she cared for.

Jane was born on March 19, 1933 in Belfast, N. Ireland to Hugh and Maryann McGrillen. She was one of eleven children.

Jane immigrated to the United States in 1952 through Ellis Island. She wed William “Bill” Mennell on May 23, 1959, and they had one son, Jim. Bill, a decorated Korean War veteran, died of brain cancer in 1968 at the age of 37. She lived in Parkchester for the majority of her life.

Those who knew Aunt Jennie always described her spunk and strong will, as she was never afraid to speak her mind, and she taught those she loved to do the same. Most of all, Aunt Jennie prided herself on her dedication to her family. She raised her son as a young widow and she also helped in raising generations of nieces and nephews.

Jane took pride in her American citizenship and treated her civic responsibilities with the utmost care. And while she embraced life as an American, she continued to honor and uphold her Irish heritage. Her favorite day of the year was St. Patrick’s Day and she attended the parade in New York City every year until she was no longer able.

Jane was a devout Catholic and contributed to countless charities. In her spare time, Jane was an avid reader, a QVC aficionado, and most importantly, a lifelong Tom Selleck fan.

Jane was preceded in death by her husband, parents, and siblings (most recently, her sister Philomena, who passed away in March). She is survived by her son, Jim, her brother Frank McGrillen, her nieces Geraldine and Jade, and many, many other nieces and nephews.

A funeral mass will be held on Tuesday, September 15, 2020 at the Church of St. Theresa of the Infant Jesus at 11am. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Aunt Jennie’s loving memory to Calvary Hospital.
