Obituary for Helen McMahon

Helen Marie

Helen Marie was born to her parents Mort & Marie Livingston in June, 1957. She was raised on City Island with her brothers Jimmy, John and Robert. Helen was a true clam digger through and through. Spending her summers down beach street, attending grammar school at St. Mary’s Star of the Sea and creating lifelong friendships.
In September of 1980, Helen married her high school sweetheart, Thomas McMahon, and they established a life together on City Island. It was on Minnieford Ave, in the house that she grew up in, where they raised their four beautiful children, Thomas John, Mikey, Katie & Bernadette.
Helen worked as a teacher at St. Mary’s School for over 25 years where she claimed the meaningful name ‘Miss Helen.’ This name would stick with her as she began to impact the lives of all, reaching far beyond the classroom. She served the school and ran the basketball program alongside her husband. She was a dedicated parishioner and Eucharistic minister of St. Mary’s church, attending mass every Sunday. She was a member of the ladies Auxiliary Post 156, the Girl Scouts and Brownies, Colony, and Parent Teacher Association of 175 just to name a few. Helen was a very active member of the City Island Community. She was committed to the betterment of City Island and all its youth programs, receiving multiple awards for her hard work and dedication. She never hesitated to help a fellow neighbor or spark a friendly conversation on the street. Anyone that crossed paths with Helen, was greeted with a smile and always left with one.
Helen enjoyed being a secret poet writing poems to help people celebrate any type of special occasion. She loved staying connected and bringing family and friends together. She was a selfless woman, spending most of her time taking care of her loved ones. Her greatest joy in life was being a mother.
In recent years, her favorite title was being a Grandma to her grandchildren Jackson and Gianna. She will be dearly missed and always remembered as a staple of the City Island Community.
Helen passed on April 1st at the age of 62.

There will be a funeral mass at St. Mary's Star of the Sea on August 21, 2020, at 10:00AM.

In lieu of lowers please make donations to St. Jude's Children's Hospital in memory of Helen.
