Obituary for Celia Sweeney

Cecelia Sweeney (nee Jacobellis) was born on September 26, 1929 to Dominick and Frances Jacobellis. She worked at Bloomingdale’s where she met her husband Fred. In addition to raising 5 children, she was a foster mother for over 20 years, caring for over 200 children. In her later years, she cared for many children out of her home and was affectionately referred to as Grandma Sweeney by many.

Celia is survived by her children, Steven, Frances, Ann, Michael (Stephanie), and Charles as well as her grandchildren Frances (Robert) Chamberlain, Christopher, Michael, Nicholas, Steven, Paul, Gregory, Susanne, and Elizabeth. She was pre-deceased by her husband Fred, her daughter-in-law Mary Ellen, and her grandchildren Marie and Peter.

A funeral mass will be held at St. Frances De Chantal Parish on Saturday, May 1st at 9:45 AM with burial to follow at St. Raymond’s Cemetery. As per her wishes, there will be no wake. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Celia Sweeney Memorial Fund at St. Jude Children’s Hospital.
