Obituary for Alan Sepp

Alan Sepp
Alan John Sepp
August 1, 1962 - March 8, 2021
Alan John Sepp was born on August 1st, 1962 in the Bronx, New York City - the same year The New York Mets were formed as the city’s newest team. New team, new future fan, and another addition to Elmar and Joan’s growing family. He was the fifth of their six children and their second son.
Alan spent his early years meandering through The Bronx Zoo and New York Botanical Gardens at the clicking heels of his mother Joan. Living just a block from these historic parks, the Sepp children were strategically exhausted after school days to save mom and dad’s sanity. Alan, being the little one, often got to ride in a stroller and enjoy the view as his older siblings scrambled and stretched their necks to catch a glimpse of the giraffes and elephants as they zipped through these massive landmark parks.
By the time Alan was six years old, his parents had had enough of uber urban apartment dwelling and made their way to the greener pastures of the Northeast Bronx’s Country Club neighborhood where Alan would cut his teeth on the basketball courts of Pelham Bay Park. A neighborhood legend on the court, Alan excelled in sports and was known to most in the area simply as “Sepp” since he often wore jerseys bearing his surname - a moniker that confounded family and neighbors alike on more than one occasion - they were all Sepps after all - but Alan was the family athlete and, for that reason, enjoyed some well-deserved “street cred.”. He and his neighborhood friends: Lawrence, Greg, Scott, John “Wolf” Barker, Roger, Tommy, Perry and others were a huge part of Alan’s life. It was rare to see them apart for much of the 70s and 80s.
Beyond sports, Alan took an early interest in the construction trade. His father, Elmar, had purchased a small house on a double lot in Country Club and spent every weekend for more than three years building a massive Scandinavian “chalet” on Ampere Avenue for his ever growing family, which had added a sixth child just two years after they moved. Alan watched as his father worked tirelessly on a new garage, a second floor, a basement extension, masonry, plumbing, electrical work, etc. Alan literally grew up in a construction zone, learning all the tricks of the trade from his dad.
Forgoing college after graduating from Cardinal Spellman High School, Alan joined his father’s construction business where he would work side by side with his father until his father’s retirement in 2012.
Having established a career early in life, Alan met and fell in love with Diana Zuckert. The two would go on to have five beautiful children: Scott, Jessica, Kimberly, Taylor and Ava. Nothing made him prouder than to see his children succeed athletically and academically. One could never get through a conversation with Alan without him showing a photo or finding some other method to inject his children into the conversation. He was even more proud when his oldest, Scott, married Evelyn and had Tristan, Alan’s grandson. He also had the fortune to become an instant grandfather when Scott first married his wife and blessed the Sepp family with Emely, Evelyn’s young daughter.
Alan continued in the construction trade for the remainder of his short life, spending the remainder of his time taking in his favorite pastimes: socializing with people in the neighborhood, watching the Knicks lose basketball games, going to the beach and reading.
Alan leaves behind his wife, five children, two grandchildren, two sisters and one brother. He was predeceased by his brother Michael, his sister Mary and his parents.
